Pier Repair/Retrofit Using UHPC—Examples of Completed Projects in North America

Abstract: The infrastructure sector is under tremendous pressure to find reliable and durable solutions to tackle maintenance and upgrade existing structures to meet our ever changing needs. Owners and designers need to select repairs and retrofits solutions that are proven and which will perform as intended for the remaining life of the structure. Ultra-High Performance Concrete (UHPC) sold under the brand name Ductal ® by Lafarge North America Inc. (a member of LafargeHolcim) has been used throughout North America for… Show more

“…Extensive research in the last decades lead to the application of UHPC in various fields like for example in bridges, façade elements or pier repair [4][5][6]. In most of the applications the building components were produced in precast concrete element plants and assembled on site [7].…”

“…To date, many projects have incorporated UHPFRC, comprising either repairs or new designs (Doiron 2017). The market size of UHPFRC is expected to grow 7% annually between 2017 and 2023 due to distinct advantages of UHPFRC in applications where narrow formwork and dense reinforcement are inevitable, high-strength material is required and the surrounding environment is aggressive (Darling 2018).…”

“…Xu et al [21] used UHPC mixed with polymer fiber to strengthen plain concrete beams by using a cast-in-place plain UHPC layer to reinforce their underside, greatly improving their bending capacity while inhibiting the development of cracks. Wu and Lin [22] evaluated the influence of U-shaped UHPC reinforcement over the failure mode, fracture strength, ultimate bearing capacity, and deformation of RC beams.…”
