Pillar[5]arene-based polymeric architectures constructed by orthogonal supramolecular interactions

Abstract: Ureidopyrimidinone functionalized pillar[5]arene (UPyP5) was synthesized and employed to complex with a bisparaquat derivative (G) to form supramolecular polymers at relatively high concentration. The orthogonal binding interactions including quadruple hydrogen bonding and host-guest interaction should play vital roles in the construction of this linear assembly.

“…106 The monobromide 39 [5] and dibromide 40 [5], which are prepared by cocyclization method (Scheme 15), were converted to monoamine 70 [5] and diamine 71 [5], respectively, by Gabriel synthesis (Scheme 22). 84,107 Mono-72 [5] and diureidopyrimidinone 73 [5] were synthesized from the monoamine 70 [5] and A1/A2 diamine 71 [5], respectively. Reaction between azides and alkynes with copper(I), the copper(I)-catalyzed Huisgen alkyne−azide 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition reaction (CuAAC reaction), is a very efficient and quick reaction.…”

“…When H18 and bisparaquat derivative G1 were mixed in a 2:1 ratio, inclusion of the bisparaquat in the pillar[5]arene host was observed. The dimerization of H18 units led to formation of cyclic or acyclic oligomers and eventually of a linear supramolecular polymer as the concentration increased 30…”

“…[34,35] In the past few years, a variety of supramolecular polymers based on pillar[n]arene analogues were constructed through the reasonable design of the host and guest structures. [36][37][38][39][40][41][42][43] More recently, our group reported the first example of organometallic supramolecular polymer gels based on pillar [5]arene functionalized metallacycles by unifying the host−guest property of pillar [5]arene derivatives and coordination-driven self-assembly through a hierarchical orthogonal design strategy. [44] By employing a monofunctionalized pillar [5]arene species as the 120° dipyridyl donor to coordinate with two complementary 180° di-Pt(II) accepter with different length, two different sized hexakis-pillar [5]arene metallacycles were obtained via coordination-driven self-assembly in one step and in nearly quantitative yield (Figure 1).…”
