“…Nine studies were randomized controlled trials (one was cross-over with patients as their own controls) [92][93][94][95][96][97][98][99][100] and seven were before and after studies (one controlled) [101][102][103][104][105][106][107]. Seven studies assessed xerostomia [94, 99-102, 104, 105] and nine studies evaluated both xerostomia and salivary flow rate [92, 93, 95-98, 103, 106, 107].…”

“…Prevention of the I-131 induced sialadenitis can be done by parasympathomimetic drugs like pilocarpine and sialogogue agents, which accelerate salivary flow and hence radioactive clearance from the salivary glands [7]. However, not all studies advocate the efficacy of this approach [8].…”

“…To demonstrate a further use of pilocarpine, Aframian et al 17 published a study demonstrating the efficacy of a single 5 mg dose of pilocarpine to increase stimulated and non-stimulated salivary flow in five patients with thyroid cancer who underwent adjuvant radioiodine therapy at least three months before the study. The results showed a significantly increased stimulated and nonstimulated salivary flow in four patients; there were no changes in the systolic and diastolic blood pressure, the pulse or body temperature.…”
