The power generation sector is considered one of the major contributors to nitrogen oxides (NOx) emissions which have serious impacts on air quality. An optimization model is developed to help decision‐makers determine the best strategy or mix of strategies for the electricity sector to meet a given NOx reduction target and electricity demand at a minimum cost. The model recommended the selective catalytic reduction (SCR) technology to be applied at higher NOx emissions and the reduction reached up to 80 %. This potential option provides promising prospects for NOx emissions control, which is in line with the economic demand for sustainable energy and environmentally friendly technologies.
