A pre‐Late Wisconsinan, post‐Illinoian, till sheet has long been recognized in north‐central Iowa, but has not been formally recognized or defined until now. Early researchers referred to these deposits as the ‘Tazewell’, and the term ‘Sheldon Creek’ was more recently used informally by the Iowa Geological Survey in guidebooks and reports. Recent mapping has extended the eastern margin significantly past previous interpretations. The Sheldon Creek Formation has similar lithologic characteristics to the overlying Alden Member of the Dows Formation, and the two units are distinguished mainly by stratigraphic position. Differentiation from underlying Pre‐Illinoian till units is accomplished using lithology, primarily matrix grain‐size and sand fraction lithology. A suite of 22 radiocarbon ages indicate two distinct, separate groupings within the Sheldon Creek data. These data strongly suggest ice advanced south to 42° N twice, once during Marine Isotope Stage (MIS) 3 and again during late MIS 3 or possibly early MIS 2. The presence of the Laurentide Ice Sheet in northern Iowa during MIS 3 has significant implications for ice sheet reconstructions during this interval.

Naturally occurring arsenic can adversely affect water quality in geologically diverse aquifers throughout the world. Chronic exposure to arsenic via drinking water is a human health concern due to risks for certain cancers, skin abnormalities, peripheral neuropathy, and other negative health effects. Statewide in Minnesota, USA, 11% of samples from new drinking water wells have arsenic concentrations exceeding 10 μg/L; in certain counties more than 35% of tested samples exceed 10 μg/L arsenic. Since 2008, Minnesota well code has required testing water from new wells for arsenic. Sample collection protocols are not specified in the well code, so among 180 well drillers there is variability in sampling methods, including sample collection point and sample collection timing. This study examines the effect of arsenic sample collection protocols on the variability of measured arsenic concentrations in water from new domestic water supply wells. Study wells were drilled between 2014 and 2016 in three regions of Minnesota that commonly have elevated arsenic concentrations in groundwater. Variability in measured arsenic concentration at a well was reduced when samples were (1) filtered, (2) collected from household plumbing instead of from the drill rig pump, or (3) collected several months after well construction (instead of within 4 weeks of well installation). Particulates and fine aquifer sediments entrained in groundwater samples, or other artifacts of drilling disturbance, can cause undesirable variability in measurements. Establishing regulatory protocols requiring sample filtration and/or collection from household plumbing could improve the reliability of information provided to well owners and to secondary data users.

Understanding rain, ground, and surface water interactions in riparian zones is essential for hydrologic and environmental management. The novelty of this study lies in its revelation of isotopic shifts and consequent evaluation of hydrologic pathways and processes within the forested riparian zones of three distinct streams, valleys, and riparian systems in a carbonate-sandstone incipient karst landscape. We collected water samples from three southeastern Minnesota catchments: Trout Brook, Crystal Creek, and Bridge Creek. A Picarro L2130i was used to measure δ18O for oxygen, and δD for deuterium in units of ‰ (per mil). We estimated the global meteoric line for the study sites, built upon aquifer age dating, and explored aquifer transit time for the study sites using a simple seasonal amplitude model. The results showed small amplitudes for 2020 and 2021, suggesting that bedrock aquifer water was the primary source water with a mean core transit time greater than 10 years. All three catchments were different but had similar bedrock valley types and riparian sediment. The primary driving factor was the seasonal precipitation input mixing with existing water. In a normal to wetter year, the isotopic data showed larger amplitude shifts between seasons with trendlines that adjusted depending on the temperature of the new water additions. The proposed approach is valuable in revealing complex hydrologic processes and pathways and can contribute extensively to the planning and management of karst riparian systems.
