Pilot Research Study on the Provision of the Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing Integrative Group Treatment Protocol With Female Cancer Patients

Abstract: The purpose of this research is to evaluate the effectiveness of the eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) Integrative Group Treatment Protocol (EMDR-IGTP) in reducing posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms related to the diagnosis and treatment of different types of cancer in adult women. EMDR-IGTP intensive therapy was administered for 3 consecutive days, twice daily, to 24 adult women diagnosed with different types of cancer (cervical, breast, colon, bladder, and skin) who had PTSD sym… Show more

“…Also, sometimes more than 10 memories per patient were targeted during the intensive treatment. Important differences relative to earlier EMDR studies (Grey, 2011;Jarero et al, 2015;Lobenstine & Courtney, 2013;Proudlock & Hutchins, 2016;E. Shapiro & Laub, 2015;Wesson & Gould, 2009) were that the patients stayed at the institution twice, for 4 consecutive days in a row, and were offered an intensive sports program as well as psychoeducation.…”

“…DuHamel and colleagues 71 found that a ten-session, telephone-based CBT intervention designed to address cancer-related PTSD was more effective than was an assessment-only control condition in reduction of intrusive ideation (p<0·05), avoidance (p<0·001), and general distress and depression (p<0·05) in haemapoietic stem-cell transplant survivors. Eye movement desensitisation and reprocessing (EMDR) 72 interventions have also shown promise in reduction of cancer-related PTSD symptoms (p<0·001), 73 although the mechanisms of EMDR are unclear. 74 Supportive expressive group therapy 59 has reduced re-experiencing and avoidance symptoms in women with metastatic breast cancer (effect size 0·25, p=0·03).…”

“…Jarero et al, conducted a pilot study to evaluate the effectiveness of EMDR-Integrative Group Treatment Protocol Adapted for Ongoing Traumatic Stress (EMDR-IGTP-OTS) in reducing cancer-related posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) for adult women [13]. EMDR intensive therapy was administered for three consecutive days, twice daily, to 24 adult women diagnosed with different types of cancer (cervical, breast, colon, bladder, and skin) who had PTSD symptoms related to their diagnosis and treatment.…”
