“…Indeed, in our test conditions, 10 gCOD of propionate per kilogram of medium at a moisture content of 82% corresponded to about 8 g L À1 of propionate in the liquid phase. This value is close to the inhibitory concentration normally encountered (Aguilar et al, 1995;Le Hyaric et al, 2010;Gourdon and Vermande, 1987).…”

“…Le procédé est bénéfique pour l'environnement et offre de nombreux avantages (Nelson et al, 2002;Sakar et al, 2009). Il permet de produire du biogaz combustible, une énergie renouvelable, à partir de la matière organique (Le Hyaric et al, 2010 ;Kalloum et al, 2011). Le recyclage de la matière organique des déchets réduit considérablement les émissions des gaz à effet de serre et la contamination des eaux de surface et souterraine (Romano et al, 2006).…”

“…Compared to the large number of studies focused on the recovery potential of material and energy from both the wastewater and biological sludge line, a rather limited number of researchers have investigated the potential of recovering the energy and material content of the solid residues from wastewater pre-treatment, that is, from the screening units. Some attempts can be found in the literature, mainly focused on screenings components (Le Hyaric et al, 2009), elemental composition (Cadavid-Rodriguez and Horan, 2012) and valorisation through anaerobic digestion (Cadavid-Rodriguez and Horan, 2012, 2013; Le Hyaric et al, 2010). The quantitative characterisation of screenings from three WWTPs located in the southern part of France found that the average annual per capita production, expressed as kg per year per Inhabitants Equivalent (kg (year IE) −1 ) varied over a broad range of values, for example 0.53 and 3.49 kg (year IE) −1 , such a variability being dictated by both meteorological conditions and sewage system characteristics.…”
