Pilot Study for Validation and Differentiation of Alveolar and Esophageal Air

Abstract: Breath analysis is an expanding scientific field with great potential for creating personalized and non-invasive health screening and diagnostics techniques. However, the wide range of contradictory results in breath analysis is explained by the lack of an optimal standard procedure for selective breath sampling. Recently we developed novel instrumentation for selective breath sampling, enabling the precise collection of a pre-determined portion of exhaled air using AI (Machine Learning) algorithm. This work p… Show more

“…To be more specific, the sum of all the components, also known as the total explained variance, reached levels of 97.9%. If IMS proved to be capable of distinguishing such complex samples almost perfectly, then, its suitability for overall VOCs detection is evident [104].…”

“…The increasing number of risk factors and activities, like smoking, is leading to an equal increase in oesophageal cancer incidence. The identification of biomarkers in the exhaled breath of patients has been deeply studied regarding its potential for a rapid, non-invasive, and accurate diagnosis [148,154,155].…”

“…The remaining part of breath used for analysis is composed of end-tidal or alveolar air. This portion of exhaled air contains a higher concentration of endogenous VOCs that originate from blood-gas exchange in the alveoli and thus more closely reflect metabolic conditions (Jia et al 2019, Santos et al 2021. When polymer bags are used, a mixed expiratory breath is usually collected.…”
