PilotEar: Enabling In-ear Inertial Navigation

Abstract: Navigation systems are used daily. While different types of navigation systems exist, inertial navigation systems (INS) have favorable properties for some wearables which, for battery and form factors may not be able to use GPS. Earables (aka ear-worn wearables) are living a momentum both as leisure devices, and sensing and computing platforms. The inherent high signal to noise ratio (SNR) of ear-collected inertial data, due to the vibration dumping of the musculoskeletal system; combined with the fact that pe… Show more

“…Given the widely usage of earphones, earables have gained tremendous attention for human sensing, such as blood flow [29], blood pressure [9], hear rate [11], dietary monitoring based on swallow [4], navigation [2], facial gestures detection [3], and authentication [18,20,52]…”

“…This earworn sensing platform uses Arduino Nano 33 BLE Sense as microcontroller (MCU) and collects motion from the 9-axis IMU for earable prototype and iphone. The PilotEar achieved the drift of 0.11𝑚 when fusing both earables (7).…”

“…Despite being widely used in the literature (Ahuja et al, 2021;A ´rvai and Homolya, 2020;Hanafi et al, 2019;Wang et al, 2022), this conventional method will be discussed in this paper to highlight its limitations, particularly for large tilt angles and when the IMU is pointing toward the east and west directions.…”
