Piroplasms of New Zealand seabirds

Abstract: 18Blood and ectoparasitic ticks were collected from migratory seabirds in New Zealand, 19including Australasian gannets (n = 13) from two sites, and red-billed gulls (n = 9) and white-20 fronted terns (n = 2) from a third location. Blood smears were screened for parasite presence by 21 microscopy, while DNA from blood samples was subjected to PCR for the presence of tick-22 transmitted protozoan haemoparasites belonging to the order Piroplasmida. Parasites were 23 identified by comparing small subunit ribosoma… Show more

“…Characterization of the mitochondrial genome and parasite features of Babesia bicornis , a species grouped in the T . equi clade based on 18S analysis [7,46], will likely aid in the resolution of the evolutionary relationships of this clade. Lack of evidence for host leukocyte manipulation by T .…”

“…equi within Theileria [810], and in fact, the majority of recent molecular phylogenetic analyses of 18S demonstrate that T . equi represents a unique clade within Piroplasmida (Fig 1; [7,11,24,45,46]). Furthermore, two of these studies have placed T .…”

“…Recently, the description of piroplasmids in avian species around the world has been raised [9][10][11][12][48][49][50][51][52]. According to Chavatte et al [53] avian piroplasmids form a poliphyletic group that is currently divided into three clades: the first one is related to Babesia duncani and protheilerids and formed by B. ardeae from Ardea cinerea, B. poelea and Fig.…”

“…The PCR conditions for the primary PCR (primers BT18SF1/BT18SR1) consisted of a pre-PCR step of 95 °C for 5 min; followed by 40 cycles of 94 °C for 30 s, 52 °C for 30 s, and 72 °C for 2 min; and a final extension of 72 °C for 7 min. The PCR conditions of the secondary PCR (primers BT18SF2/BT18SR2) consisted of a pre-PCR step of 95 °C for 5 min; followed by 40 cycles of 94 °C for 30 s, 50 °C for 30 s, and 72 °C for 80 s; and a final extension of 72 °C for 7 min (PAPARINI et al, 2014).…”
