“…The establishment of a diagnostic ultrasound service in the University of Cape Town teaching hospital group in October, 1970, led to the decision to assess the value of ultrasonics in the management of suspected placenta praevia. In particular the ability to predict a safe outcome (rather than a grading) of placenta praevia, and to achieve under routine conditions in a busy hospital the accuracy obtained by experts (Donald and Abdulla, 1968;Campbell and Kohorn, 1968;Aiers et al, 1969) was investigated. In addition, a comparison was made, where possible, with radio-isotope placental location, the method previously used in the hospital.…”
