Planktic morphospecies of the cyanobacterial genus Anabaena = subg. Dolichospermum - 1. part: coiled types.

Abstract: Abstract:The traditional cyanobacterial genus Anabaena contains several groups of morphospecies, which should be classified in different genera according to modern phenotypic and molecular criteria. The separation into several clusters was confirmed by 16S rRNA sequencing. The generic name Anabaena must be maintained for the benthic species without gas vesicles, the type species of which is Anabaena oscillarioides. The planktic types are divided also in several subclusters; one of them can be provisionally des… Show more

“…The results of morphometric measurements of the fresh samples that were collected for the current study were similar to those presented by Li and Watanabe (2000). Komárek and Zapomělová (2007) noted morphological similarities among the four Anabaena species. According to these authors, the following are especially difficult to distinguish: A. circinalis, A. spiroides, and A. flos-aquae.…”

“…The subgenus Dolichospermum comprises species of two morphological types with coiled and straight trichomes (Komárek, Zapomělová 2007). Komárek and Zapomělová (2007) included a review of species with coiled trichomes in the first part of this list for practical reasons. In their article, morphospecies are included that occur in nature mainly with straight trichomes.…”

“…A previous study in 1986, considering the whole Lower Uruguay River and eight tributaries, The nostocacean Dolichospermum cf. pseudocompactum was previously known only from eutrophic lakes in Central Japan (Watanabe et al 2004, KomáreK & Zapomělová 2007 and from Jehay Douves, a small artificial lake in Belgium (WiLLaMe & hoFFMann 1999). D. pseudocompactum Uruguayan population Fottea 11(1): 225-234, 2011differs from the Japanese and Belgian ones in the diameter of the trichome coiling and in the akinete, which was bigger in the Uruguayan population (Table 3).…”

“…Cyanobacteria taxonomic determination was carried out according to Anagnostidis (1999, 2005) and Komárek and Zapomělová (2007). Cyanobacteria abundance was determined by epifluorescence microscopy, since phycoerythrin and phycocyanin contained in CB, when examined under blue light excitation, fluoresce orange and red, respectively (Walsby and Avery, 1996;Ernst et al, 2006).…”
