Planning and Implantation of NetFPGA Platform on Network Emulation Testbed

Abstract: Abstract:The concepts of cloud computing and Internet applications have expanded gradually and have become more and more important. Researchers need a new, highspeed network to build experimental environments for testing new network protocols without affecting existing traffic. In this paper, we describe a way to integrate NetFPGA platform, OpenFlow concept and NetFPGA reference designs into a network testbed to improve the packet processing speed and the dynamic adjustability for network emulation experiments… Show more

“…In the initial phase, only 16 nodes were available for conducting experiments, while in phase 3, there are 198 nodes providing computing resources to testbed users. Phase 4 saw the deployment of virtual machines on shared hardware, and the NetFPGA was tentatively equipped into several nodes for providing embedded resources on network component evaluation and verification. The overall testbed infrastructure is shown in Figure . Control framework: The core software of Testbed@TWISC was inherited from Emulab .…”

“…Furthermore, performance‐wise, the node hardware of Testbed@TWISC is not equipped to host a large number of virtual machines—each node may be able to host just a few virtual nodes. Hence, we decided to use the bare metal solution for providing virtual machine nodes to testbed users . The developing architecture is shown as Figure .…”

“…With support from a project award by the National Science Council of Taiwan government, researchers at NCKU and KUAS have been designing and maintaining a network testbed that interconnects several heterogeneous datacenters across the public Internet. The current implementation and deployment has supported several research projects and applications, including cloud federation [34], international testbed interconnections [31], and network/security research experiments over production networks [35,36]. With the system support, each sliver service could be allocated a portion of network resources that may be hosted either on the hosts within a datacenter or on a collection of physical hosts across different datacenters.…”
