Planning and Scheduling in Supply Chains: An Overview of Issues in Practice

Abstract: This paper gives an overview of the theory and practice of planning and scheduling in supply chains. It first gives an overview of the various planning and scheduling models that have been studied in the literature, including lot sizing models and machine scheduling models. It subsequently categorizes the various industrial sectors in which planning and scheduling in the supply chains are important; these industries include continuous manufacturing as well as discrete manufacturing. We then describe how planni… Show more

“…As such, the ARP module not only provides a tool for analysis, but also a lever for operational improvement. Although planning and scheduling models are frequently treated independently (Kreipl and Pinedo, 2004), we consider them linked with each other in line with the hierarchical production planning (HPP) philosophy (Hax and Meal, 1975). As a result, the decisions made at the higher planning levels impose constraints for the shorter planning levels.…”

“…A third point, also related to the flexibility of the model regards the links between different areas of the organisation, a problem addressed by Kreipl and Pinedo (2004). The flexibility of the model allows it to incorporate -myriad complexities notwithstandingthe many variables that influence decision-making vis-à-vis production sequencing.…”

“…When it comes to adopt the plans and execution phases, they hardly provide any guidelines or mechanisms [19]. For instance, Ivert [20] reports the negative consequences of APSs used to handle disturbances on the lower shop floor level as extracting information from these kinds of systems is too complicated.…”
