Plant‐based Food Products for Antimycobacterial Therapy

Abstract: While Tuberculosis (TB) is an ancient disease, it still remains one of top 10 causes of death globally and also a leading cause of death from an infectious agent, exceeding even Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV). Worldwide, an estimated 1.7 billion people are infected with Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb). “…Regarding phytochemical composition, fruits and leaves are by far the most studied parts of the myrtle. In both cases, polyphenols are the most representative compounds, extremely important not only for the morphological and physiological functions of the plant, but also essential for human health because of their multiple biological activities (Afrin et al., 2020; Battino et al., 2019; Forbes‐Hernandez et al., 2020; Sieniawska, Maciejewska‐Turska, Świątek, & Xiao, 2020; Sun et al., 2020).…”

“…Protein deficiency plays a role to enhance bacterial growth and dissemination due to thymic atrophy and the impaired generation and maturation of T-lymphocytes. It also impairs the protective interaction between macrophages and T-lymphocytes; higher production of transforming growth factor-β, which is a mediator of immunosuppression and immunopathogenesis in tuberculosis; decreased production of Th1 cytokines; and loss of tuberculosis resistance following BCG vaccination [ 16 ].…”

“…Earliest known treatment of this disease consisted of natural methods to manage TB and comprised various rituals derived from old traditional practices. 13 Age‐old practices related to TB treatment that have been handed down from generation to generation and are still part of TB therapy in various countries of South Africa and Asia. 14 , 15 , 16 , 17 , 18 , 19 , 20 , 21 These traditional therapies although are not capable of completely eradicating the disease but are quite effective in treating the respiratory disorders associated with TB and reducing the toxicity associated with antituberculosis therapy (ATT) as observed by the treatment provided in the patients by the traditional healers.…”
