Plant bioindicators of pollution in Sadat City, Western Nile Delta, Egypt

Abstract: Anthropogenic pollution can take various forms and affect the air, water, soil, and plants. Monitoring pollution via compounds formed in living organisms such as plants, so-called bioindicators, may be a useful approach for environmental monitoring. The purpose of this study was to investigate and compare plants growing in industrial and residential areas of Sadat City, Egypt, as bioindicators and biomarkers of industrial pollution. Phenolic compounds, flavonoids, and metals were measured in Bougainvillea glab… Show more

“…Plants have been widely recognized as effective means of entrapping airborne pollutants. Hence, they can be used for monitoring air quality and for phytoremediation (Azzazy, 2020). Trees survive better than lower plants in urban areas due to their tougher physiognomy (Rai, 2016) and it is imperative to understand how they react to air pollution and develop adaptive strategies.…”

“…(2021) in localities with high pollution caused by NO and SO 2 , probably because other molecules (ascorbic acid, tocopherol, or proline) keep the antioxidant system active. Vehicular pollution led to increased levels of flavonoids in the leaves of Bougainvillea (Azzazy, 2020).…”

“…The use of bioindicators with plant seeds over the years has been one of the scientific techniques reported for the determination of cytotoxicity, proving to be an instrument of high sensitivity and easy handling (Mendoza and Salazar 2022 ; Mercado and Caleño 2021 ; García-Medina et al 2020 ; Azzazy 2020 ; Leston et al 2013 ; Nikitaki et al 2018 ; Kummerová et al 2013 ). This is how plant species have been used for the identification of cytological changes caused by multiple chemical agents such as Allium cepa , Lens culinaris , and Pisum sativum Salazar and Quintero Caleño ( 2020 ), also recommended for their economic and practical efficiency, considering that the increasing production, the use of this drug, its environmental presence, and the hazardous impact on aquatic organisms and other non-target individuals could increase rapidly.…”

“…Plastic film is widely used in ecological restoration, such as desert control, saline alkali land improvement, and slope greening protection. Most mulching films commonly used in production are man-made materials that include many chemicals with high costs and environmental pollution potential [ 1 ]. Naturally weathered red-bed soil is a widely available material.…”
