Plant Composition and Species Use in Agroforestry Homegardens in the Eastern Amazon, Brazil

Abstract: Agroforestry home gardens are integrated arrangements of common vegetable plants near residences, resembling tropical forests. They cultivate multiple species to meet families’ basic needs, including food, medicine, and family activities. This study aimed to assess the composition and use of plant species in agroforestry home gardens in three municipalities in the western region of Pará. The study analyzed 119 home gardens in Belterra, Mojuí dos Campos, and Santarém in Pará, Brazilian Amazonia. These home gard… Show more

“…As a result, areas that were previously dominated by old-growth forests may be currently in early-successional stages (Figure 1m) or become areas for agriculture and livestock activities. Particularly in regions near communities, roads, or urban centers today, high densities of exotic plant and animal species are expected to be present (Fares et al, 2020;Ferreira et al, 2016;Pauletto et al, 2023;Salm et al, 2009).…”

“…At the same time, the small number of species found in riverside habitats is one species (1.1%). This is because fruits consumed directly by the community dominate the food plants in the forest, according to research (McLennan, 2013), many food plants in forests are dominated by fruit because they have particular adaptations related to their reproductive strategy, while the plants in the yard are cultivated (Pauletto et al, 2023).…”
