Studies on the impact of agricultural practices on plant diversity provide important information for policy makers and the conservation of the environment. The aim of the present work was to evaluate wild plant diversity across the agroecosystems in two contrasting regions of Bulgaria; Pazardzhik-Plovdiv (representing agroecosystems in the lowlands) and Western Stara Planina (the Balkan Mountains, representing agroecosystems in the foothills of the mountains). This study conducted a two-year assessment of plant diversity in different types of agricultural and forest ecosystems, representing more than 30 land use types. Plant diversity, measured by species number, was affected by the land use type only in Pazardzhik-Plovdiv region. More pronounced was the effect of the groups of land use types on the diversity, measured by the mean species number per scoring plot. Climatic conditions, measured by 19 bioclimatic variables, were the most important factor affecting plant species diversity. Six bioclimatic variables had a significant effect on the plant diversity, and the effect was more pronounced when the analysis considered pooled data of the two regions. The highest plant diversity was found on grazing land with sparse tree cover, while the lowest one was in the land use types representing annual crops or fallow. The study also established a database on weed species, relevant to agriculture. A number of common weeds were found in the Pazardzhik-Plovdiv region, while the most frequent species in the Western Stara Planina region were indigenous ones. Overall, the natural flora of Western Stara Planina was more conserved; eleven orchid species with conservation significance were found in the pastures and meadows in that region. The present study is the first attempt in Bulgaria to characterize the plant diversity across diverse agroecosystems representing many different land use types and environmental conditions. The results can contribute to nature conservation, biodiversity, and the sustainable use of plant resources.

Complex investigations designed to explore the impact of extensive, organic-sustainable and conventional-chemical farming systems on changes of soil chemical, physical and microbiological properties of sandy loam Haplic Luvisol (LVh) were performed at the Vokė Branch of the Lithuanian Research Centre for Agriculture and Forestry during [2003][2004][2005][2006][2007][2008][2009][2010][2011][2012]. The studies were carried out employing different crop rotations, where the plant sequence was laid out in four treatments so that the plant residues in the soil would accumulate more organic matter and nitrogen. Research evidence showed that different farming systems and plant sequences in rotations did not affect soil acidity, but significantly increased the contents of total nitrogen and organic carbon and reduced the contents of available phosphorus and potassium. Soil physical properties changed accordingly. Higher moisture levels were determined in soil under extensive and conventional-chemical farming systems. At the lower soil layers the impact of green manure on the reduction of soil bulk density and increase of total and air-filled porosity was evident. Extensive and conventional-chemical farming systems favoured the distribution of fungi in the soil. With the application of organic farming system, the balance between the number of ammonifying and mineral nitrogen assimilating bacteria was maintained.

Dynamics of weed density with a natural background of weeds in agrophytocenoses of sainfoin (Onobrychis sativa L.), birdsfoot trefoil (Lotus corniculatus L.) and alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.), pure grown (100%) and in mixtures with cocksfoot (Dactylis glomerata L.) (50:50%) and sown under a cover of pea (Pisum sativum L.) were tested in field trial in the Institute of Forage Crops, Pleven, Bulgaria. It was found that the weed infestance and species composition changed depending on the type of Ðµdificator. The species composition in weed associations was the highest in pure grown Lotus corniculatus L. In mixtures of Onobrychis sativa L. + Dactylis glomerata L. the highest weed infestance was recorded, and the lowest in Onobrychis sativa L. under cover of Pisum sativum L. Weed infestance in mixtures was lower as compared to pure grown swards, except Medicago sativa L. + Dactylisglomerata L. For the specific environment of study the highest part for annual dicotyledonous weed species (from 0.0 to 49.5%), followed by perennial dicotyledonous (from 3.7 to 58.2%) was obsereved. There was a strong variation in the percentage in agrophytocenoses of Convolvulus arvensis L. (from 0.0 to 11.4%), Sonchus arvensis L. (from 0.0 to 19.0%) and Erigeron canadensis L. (from 0.0 to 47.8%), whereas Matricaria recutita L. varied within narrow range (0.0 to 3.7%). The dependance allows to be used for developing more effective weed control systems in the studied forage crops and mixtures.
