“…The curvature of the coleoptiles in this bioassay was originally (Went 1928, Went andThimann 1937) represented as being directly proportional to the concentration of applied IAA (at relatively low IAA concentrations). Several workers (Bottelier 1959, Mer 1969, Digby and Firn 1976, Jacobs 1979, Trewavas 1981 have proposed that this apparently linear relationship is due to anomalous or iticorrectly interpreted data. Mer (1969) in a critical discussion of the Went & Thimann (1937) data pointed out that extension growth rates of excised coleoptiles were linearly dependent upon the logarithm of the auxin concentration. On this basis a 10-fold increase in in vivo growth rate should require approximately a 100-fold increase in diffusible auxin, which has never been observed.…”
