Plant Growth-Promoting Activities of Bacteria Isolated from an Anthropogenic Soil Located in Agrigento Province

Abstract: Bacteria producers of plant growth-promoting (PGP) substances are responsible for the enhancement of plant development through several mechanisms. The purpose of the present work was to evaluate the PGP traits of 63 bacterial strains that were isolated from an anthropogenic soil, and obtained by modification of vertisols in the Sicily region (Italy) seven years after creation. The microorganisms were tested for the following PGP characteristics: indole acetic acid (IAA), NH3, HCN and siderophore production, 1-… Show more

“…Considering the IAA production, the recorded amount ranged from 1.51 to 8.55 ppm with strains SW15 and SW14, respectively. The amounts of IAA detected in this study were similar to those reported by Barbaccia et al (2022). The differences in the capacity of PGP bacteria to generate IAA, as presented in this study, may be due to a range of factors, such as the various biosynthetic pathways, the location of the involved genes, regulatory sequences, and the presence of enzymes that can convert active free IAA into conjugated forms (Patten and Glick, 1996).…”

“…Furthermore, the inoculation of Bacillus subtilis and Azospirillum brasilense affected the growth of tomato plants through IAA synthesis. The A. brasilense produced IAA at a rate of 8.41 µg/mL in the supernatant, while the B. subtilis synthesized a considerable amount, reaching 76.34 µg/mL [39].…”

“…Among the Pseudomonas species with a large number of genomes containing the nit1C gene cluster (Table 1), P. viridiflava is a phytopatogenic species that colonize plants, organisms where cyanogenesis is broadly extended. On the other hand, some strains of P. reinekei have been described to produce cyanide [53]. In P. oleovorans, the nit1C gene cluster is encoded by the accessory genome of seven out of the 18 genomes analyzed.…”
