Plant Resistance Mechanisms to Air Pollutants: Rhythms in Ascorbic Acid Production During Growth Under Ozone Stress

Abstract: Relationships between ozone (O3) tolerance and leaf ascorbic acid concentrations in O3-susceptible (O3-S) 'Hark' and O3-resistant (O3-R) 'Hood' soybean, Glycine max (L.) Merr., cultivars were examined with high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Leaf samples were analyzed at 4 intervals during a 24 h period. “…Thus, considerable attention has recently focused on antioxidative systems in the cell wall, and in particular, the role of apoplastic ascorbate (ASC) in the scavenging of O 3 (Kelly et al 1995;Dietz 1997;Cross et al 1998;Lyons et al 1999a). L-ascorbate (vitamin C) is an abundant and powerful antioxidant, accumulating to millimolar concentrations in plant tissue (Loewus 1980(Loewus , 1988Smirno 1996;Noctor and Foyer 1998) and an inverse relationship is known to exist between leaf ASC concentrations and the sensitivity of plants to O 3 (Freebairn 1960;Freebairn and Taylor 1960;Menser 1964;Lee et al 1984;Lee 1991;MaÈ chler et al 1995;Conklin et al 1996).
