Plant response to biochar, compost, and mycorrhizal fungal amendments in post‐mine sandpits

Abstract: Extreme growing conditions inhibit restoration in sandpit mines. Co-amendment of soil conditioners such as biochar, compost, and arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) may alleviate these stresses and lead to a more successful restoration. “…This increased prairie plant growth after field planting is consistent with results from other studies of inoculated seedlings (Richter & Stutz ; Middleton et al ; Koziol & Bever ), while restorations using direct inoculation with AM fungi or whole soil without nurse plants have found increased native plant cover and diversity (Smith et al ; Bever et al ). However, our results contrast with a recent restoration where inoculation with one commercially propagated strain of Rhizoglomus irregulare did not affect plant growth (Ohsowski et al ). These observations are consistent with the results of a meta‐analysis by Maltz and Treseder () that found inoculation with native AM fungal strains isolated from undisturbed remnant sites, like the relatively diverse inoculum mixture used here, significantly increased plant growth compared to inoculation using commercially available AM fungal strains that may grow quickly and be amenable to cultivation.…”
