Plant Tissue Modelling Using Power-Law Filters

Abstract: Impedance spectroscopy has became an essential non-invasive tool for quality assessment measurements of the biochemical and biophysical changes in plant tissues. The electrical behaviour of biological tissues can be captured by fitting its bio-impedance data to a suitable circuit model. This paper investigates the use of power-law filters in circuit modelling of bio-impedance. The proposed models are fitted to experimental data obtained from eight different fruit types using a meta-heuristic optimization metho… Show more

“…The optimal EEC parameters for the considered circuit are argmin κ F(κ). The Levenberg-Marquart algorithm ( Marquardt, 1963 ) is commonly used to solve this optimization problem, although many alternative algorithms have been proposed for bioimpedance analysis ( Yousri et al., 2019 ; Gadallah et al., 2022 ; Ghoneim et al., 2022 ). Most plant EIS studies use the above method for circuit parameter identification, typically through commercial or freely available software, such as LEVM/LEVMW ( MacDonald, 2013 ), EIS Spectrum Analyzer ( Bondarenko and Ragoisha, 2005 ), LabView ( Kodosky, 2020 ), or ZView ( Johnson, 2000 ).…”

“…The power-law filter is a new category of fractional-order filters that can be realized without using the fractional-order Laplacian operator, thereby eliminating the need for fractional-order elements when realizing this class of filters [16,17]. The fractional-order lead/lag compensator provides additional degrees of freedom in the tuning process in the fractional-order control area [18].…”

“…Three main areas of EIS use can be distinguished: electrical impedance tomography in medicine [ 16 , 17 , 18 , 19 , 20 , 21 ], assessment of product quality and safety in the food industry, and the study of plant physiology in agriculture [ 22 , 23 , 24 , 25 ]. When applied to plant physiology, this method is mainly useful for characterizing quantitative cellular changes.…”
