Objectives: The aim of the study was to evaluate hormonal contraception use in women with epilepsy and to assess the risk of potential interactions between contraceptives and antiepileptic drugs (AEDs). Material and methods: Data on hormonal contraception were obtained prospectively in women of childbearing age treated in the university epilepsy clinic. Results: We evaluated 334 women with epilepsy (mean age 30.2 years). The majority of patients took one AED (193, 58%); the most commonly prescribed AEDs were: valproate, levetiracetam or lamotrigine. Hormonal contraception was used by 19 (5.7%) of all women of childbearing age. Only 7 patients (37%) of all those using hormonal contraception used preparations that did not interact with AEDs; what is more 145 (46%) patients who did not use hormonal contraception were prescribed AEDs with high teratogenic potential (valproate or/and topiramate). Conclusions: A very small percentage of women with epilepsy of childbearing potential used hormonal contraception. More than a half of that group simultaneously took AEDs that may interact with oral contraceptives. A large proportion of women taking AEDs with high teratogenic potential were not using hormonal contraception. As interaction between OC and AEDs are common, nonhormonal, highly effective methods, such as IUDs, may be ideal for women with epilepsy. The results of the study indicate the need for closer cooperation between neurologist and gynecologist caring for women with epilepsy.

Working under the assumption that the marital relationship has the greatest influence on the atmosphere of family life, 75 married couples performing parental tasks were examined and divided, using M. Braun-Gałkowska’s Marriage Success Scale, into two groups: married couples with a higher and lower level of satisfaction with their relationships. Next, the personality characteristics of the surveyed spouses were determined and compared using the following research tools: H.G. Gough’s and A.B. Heilbrun’s Adjective Check List, Z. Uchnast’s Sense of Security Questionnaire, the Emotional Intelligence Questionnaire developed by A. Ciechanowicz, A. Jaworowicz, A. Matczak, the Social Competence Questionnaire developed by A. Matczak, M. Kaźmierczak’s and M. Plopa’s Questionnaire of Marriage Communication, M. Braun-Gałkowska’s Family Attitudes Scale. Spouses with a higher level of satisfaction with their relationship, when compared to spouses with a lower level of satisfaction, are characterized by greater socialization, selfcontrol, and kindness; they obtained higher results determining their level of emotional intelligence and the effectiveness of their behaviours in intimate situations. The presented characteristics of spouses with a higher level of satisfaction with their relationship can be achieved as a result of personal development and, above all, of ongoing dialogue in the ever-changing reality of marital life. Taking advantage of the expanding offer of various forms of individual and group support can be useful in this respect. Workshops based on the participants’ involvement and referring to their own experiences are particularly helpful in working on personal development and deepening the marital relationship.

Aim. The survey was aimed at finding out the socio-economic factors determining the desire to have children and the attitude of Poles towards this topic. Material and methods. The survey, conducted in 2023, involved 735 Poles of reproductive age. The CAWI method was used to collect responses. Results. The most numerous group among the respondents were people between the ages of 18 and 25. The majority of respondents were women, people with secondary or higher education, and living in cities. A significant correlation was found between financial situation and reproductive plans. Those people who have income high enough to save money are the most likely to declare a desire to have children. The survey found a significant relationship between housing situation and desire to have children. Owning a house and being able to maintain work-life balance also influence procreation plans. Intimate relationship status had a significant impact on the desire to start a family. Respondents in informal relationships showed the highest desire to have children. Conclusions. The most important factor determining the procreation plans of Poles is a stable source of income. Social programs offered by the state are considered the least influential factor inmaking a decision to have children. Surveys conducted among groups of Poles confirm these results.
