Plasma cAMP in Normal and Abnormal Human Pregnancy

Abstract: Plasma cAMP was determined using the method of Toveyetal. in normal pregnant women with a mean concentration of 18.9 ± 0.8 pmol/ml (x ± SEM). Between weeks 9–12 and 33–36 of gestation, there were two peaks, with a mean cAMP of 22.5 ± 2.4, which were significantly increased in comparison to the other weeks of pregnancy. Significantly decreased values were found in patients with threatened abortion (weeks 12–28) which terminated in abortion (11.6 ± 2.4; p < 0.01). In premature labor no differences were found. Du… Show more

“…Plasma cAMP levels slightly decreased at the onset of labor in these 3 labor groups. The present finding is consistent with the results of Goser et al [18] who measured plasma cAMP during PGF2a infusion for in itiation of labor in 3 patients and reported a decrease of plasma cAMP 1 h after the be ginning of the infusion of PGF2«. They stated that it was obvious from their results that plasma cAMP levels reflected the endo crine state at various stages of labor.…”

“…Weiss et al [20] mea sured high amniotic fluid cAMP in PGF2"-induced midtrimester abortion, assuming a correlation of cAMP level and fetal distress. The observation of Goser et al [18] sup ported this assumption.…”

“…These experimental results indicate that maintenance of endometrial cAMP may be a requirement for maintenance of pregnancy. Patients that suffer from recurrent miscarriage exhibit reduced plasma and endometrial concentrations of cAMP [176-178]. Patients with this pregnancy phenotype also exhibit reduced plasma steroid hormone levels and reduced serum levels of hCG [179].…”
