Plasma chemical composition in the goosefish (Lophius piscatorius, L)

Abstract: 124 specimens of Lophius piscatorins, L. have been studied (22 males, 90 immature females and 12 sexually mature females) from the Mediterranean coast between October 1968 and February 1971. The plasma values of total protcins, C1-, K+, Na+, plasma iron, total iron binding capacity and plasma copper have been determined. These values are related to weight, length, sex and sexual maturity, depth of trawl and season of the year. The electrolyte content is somewhat lower than given for this species. A clear seaso… Show more

“…The sodium and potassium levels observed in the present study are, generally, consistent between locations and seasons. This finding was expected and compares favourably with reports of other investigators (Palacios et al, 1972;Holmes 8c Donaldson, 1969). Umminger (1969Umminger ( , 1970 has presented evidence of a decrease in levels of sodium in response to reduced temperatures; our own observations in this regard certainly do not indicate such changes from winter to summer.…”

“…The genetic mechanism was not established with such distribution. The goosefish transferrin values as the total iron binding capacity of serum were similar to the mammals (Palacios et al, 1972) but the saturation coefficient was lower (15-200/,). In Tinca vulgaris (Hevesy, Lockner & Sletten, 1964) it was observed that the transferrin saturation was also low (24.4 %).…”

“…In a previous paper (Palacios, Rubio & Planas, 1972) the plasma inorganic composition in relation with some ecological factors were studied. The literature on plasma proteins in the goosefish (Brull & Nizet, 1953;Forster & Berglund, 1956) gave the protein concentrations but only Brull & Nizet (1953) reported the results on electrophoretic separation of plasma from two specimens, In the present paper the plasma proteins of this species were analysed by cellulose acetate and starch-gel electrophoresis and considered the polymorphism in some fractions.…”
