Plasma Guns of an Erosion Type With the Pulse-Periodic Gas-Metal Injection

Abstract: The design of the modular plasma guns of an erosion type that operate in the pulse-periodic mode has been described. The injection of the electrode and dielectric materials occurs due to the combination of many processes initiated by the high-voltage surface discharge. The guns with the dielectrics of (C2H4)n and (C2F4)n types have been compared. Optical spectrograms of discharges for a (C2F4)n dielectric have been obtained. The radial and axial spread of sprayed components that are the part of plasma guns has… Show more

“…The operation procedure, the parameters of the electric circuit of the accelerator and the diagnostic equipment are described in detail in papers [1,11]. Oscilloscopes were used as analog-to-digital converters (ADCs), in particular 4-channel OWON XDS3104E with a bandwidth of 100 GHz and a sampling rate of 1 GSa/s; 4-channel Siglent SDS 2204X, 200 MHz, 2 GSa/s; 4-channel Agilent infinium 54855A DSO, 6 GHz, 20 GSa/s.…”

“…Table 2 Dielectric insert in the form of the porcelain isolator Carbon dielectric insert Photodiode sensors were mounted to ensure the measurement of the propagation speed of plasma created by plasma guns along the axis and radially. The set speed was (0.5…5)•10 6 cm/s, and the plasma gun voltages varied in the range of 10 to 16 kV [11]. Taking into account the distance from the plasma source to the anode mesh of 343 mm, it can be stated that the plasma fails to spread into the beam formation zone before the formation of explosive emission, reducing thus beam losses due to the existing time delay between the activation of the plasma guns (PG) and the operation of the PCG of no more than 4 µs.…”

“…As energy sources, the following can be used: Tesla transformers [5], SOS diodes (a type of semiconductor diode made using silicon deposited on a sapphire substrate, providing high electrical insulation and improved characteristics in high-frequency modes), Marx generators [6], plasma current switches [7][8][9][10][11].…”

“…3, makes it possible to identify specific sections that define the delay time between the operation of the PGs and the PCG (3 to 30 μs or more). The detailed description of the operation of plasma guns is given in article [11]. A minimum possible value of 3 μs is conditioned by the signal propagation time along the transmission lines and the response times of the discharger F2, the delay unit and the PCG start-up unit.…”
