“…Similar findings con cerning the hypergonadotropism of the pituitary were obtained by Lipshultz et al in 1976. With regard to the raised FSH levels the hypergonadotropism of the pitu itary (elevated FSH levels; higher factorial increase in FSH after administration of GnRH) may be explained as a consequence of the disturbed spermiogenesis [Rosen and Weintraub, 1971;De Kretser et al, 1974;Hunter et al, 1974;Lipshultz et al, 1976]. The elevated LH levels in some patients are probably indicative of an impaired Leydig cell function in these bilaterally cryptorchid pa tients.…”

“…The results are surprising since it was anticipated that the increased FSH levels would be inversely correlated with serum inhibin if inhibin is the substance involved in the specific negative feedback control of FSH (McCullagh, 1932;Franchimont et al 1972;de Kretser et al 1972). The patients investigated were representative as a group of men with testicular disorders contributing to infertility since, as seen in other studies, the patterns of progressively rising FSH and LH and lower testosterone levels are associated with increasing testicular damage as shown by decreasing testis volume and sperm count (Franchimont et al 1972;de Kretser et al 1972;Hunter, Edmond, Watson & McLean, 1974). The present data also do not confirm the observation that, in a series of 19 men with severe seminiferous tubule damage resulting from chemotherapy, those men with elevated inhibin levels have significantly higher FSH levels (Tsatsoulis, Shalet, Robertson et al 1988).…”

“…There is evidence for Leydig cell dysfunction in men with severe testicular damage as evidenced by a greater proportion of men who show increased LH and low testosterone levels (de Kretser et al 1972;Hunter et al 1974). Furthermore these men show an impaired testosterone response to human chorionic gonadotrophin stimulation (de Kretser, Burger, Hudson & Keogh, 1975).…”
