“…The lipid increment has been shown to be primarily in the pre-beta fraction (VLDL) which is triglyceride-rich (9,13,22,24,32,36). Similarly, decreased levels in the alpha lipoproteins (HDL) have been described in adult uremic patients and are attributed to abnormally low levels of alpha lipoprotein cholesterol content (5,22,32,36).…”

“…INSULIN Bagdade et al (1968) reported that in both dialysed and undialysed uraemic patients plasma immunoreactive insulin concentrations were increased. In contrast Kaye et al (1973) reported that there was no significant difference between the mean immunoreactive insulin concentrations in a group of undialysed uraemic patients and those in the control subjects, though the mean glucose concentration was increased in the uraemic group. Furthermore, these workers could not find any correlation between insulin and triglyceride concentrations in either the control subjects or the patients; the insulin concentrations showed a similar distribution in both groups.…”

“…A valuable 179 one was that of Kaye et al (1973) in which they studied 15 undialysed patients (8 male, 7 female), who were selected on a clinical and biochemical basis as having chronic renal failure without gross proteinuria. All had a creatinine clearance of less than 50 ml/rnin and were uraemic.…”

“…The range of values obtained from 13 fasting and resting control subjects was 117 to 835 ,umol/l (as stearic acid), with a mean (±s.e. mean) of 359±66 Lrmol/l (Kaye, Moorhead and Wills, 1973).…”
