Plasma Rich in Growth Factors in Macular Hole Surgery

Abstract: The aim of this study was to evaluate the use of PRGF (plasma rich in growth factors) as an adjuvant to PPV (pars plana vitrectomy) in recurrent, persistent, or poor prognosis MH (macular hole). Patients with MH were treated with PPV plus adjuvant therapy (PRGF membrane (mPRGF) and injectable liquid PRGF (iPRGF)). The anatomical closure of MH and postoperative BCVA (best-corrected visual acuity) were evaluated. Eight eyes (eight patients) were evaluated: myopic MH (MMH, n = 4), idiopathic MH (IMH, n = 2), iatr… Show more

“…Plasma rich in growth factors (PRGF) is a blood derivative product of autologous origin with important biological features such as antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory and anti-fibrotic properties. PRGF, in its different therapeutic formulations (eye drops, clot and membrane), has been effectively used to treat several ocular surface and corneal diseases [6,7] and even in macular-hole surgery [8,9], demonstrating its role in tissular regeneration, inflammation control and fibrosis modulation [10,11]. The biological properties of PRGF would theoretically be of great help in reducing fibrosis after NPDS.…”
