Plasma Thrombin-activatable Fibrinolysis Inhibitor Levels Correlate with the Disease Activity of Ulcerative Colitis

Abstract: Objective Patients with ulcerative colitis (UC) are at an increased risk for thromboembolic events, particularly in patients with extensive and active disease. To date, a few studies have been published on the role of thrombin-activatable fibrinolysis inhibitor (TAFI) in UC. However, there are no reports in the literature investigating the effect of UC treatment on plasma TAFI levels. Methods The plasma TAFI antigen levels were quantitatively determined using ELISA kits for 20 UC patients at activation and rem… Show more

“…27,28 It is also known that circulating TAFI levels are enhanced in patients with several diseases, including rheumatoid arthritis and inflammatory bowel disease 29,30 ; reflect the degree of inflammation; and can be decreased by treatment. 30,31 Thrombomodulin is a transmembrane glycoprotein expressed on the surfaces of all vascular endothelial cells and many other types of cells, which contributes to maintenance of homeostasis during the inflammatory response. 32 Thrombin and thrombin/ thrombomodulin complexes can activate TAFI.…”

“…Although the pathophysiological role of TAFI in downregulation of fibrinolysis 9 and its role in inflammation 10 point to its possible role in RSA, the published data about TAFI 1040 C/T polymorphism in complicated pregnancies, including RSA, are limited and inconsistent. Moreover, it did not confer its possible association with RAS.…”
