Plasmablastic lymphoma of the maxillary sinus; a case report and review of the literature

Abstract

Plasmablastic lymphoma (PBL) is a rare and aggressive variant of diffuse large B‐cell lymphoma (DLBCL). It is a recently described variant of non‐Hodgkin's lymphoma that occurs almost exclusively in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection, in the post‐transplant setting and in other immunosuppressive states. Only a handful of cases have been reported in the literature affecting immunocompetent patients. We present a rare case of PBL arising in the maxillary sinus in an immunocompetent, HIV‐negative patient. The malignancy first presented in general dental practice as painless tooth mobility.
