Plasmacytoma arising in the vicinity of a foreign body in the nasal cavity

Abstract: The development of a plasmacytoma in the vicinity of a long residing metallic foreign body in the nasal cavity is presented. In spite of the multitude of reports concerning neoplasma associated with trauma, most of which arise in chronic scars, this presentation is very rare. It is speculated that the plasma cell proliferation, occurring nearby the foreign body, roots from an immunologic and granulomatous reaction. This case is discussed in light of the vast data on foreign body tumorigenesis obtained from lab… Show more

“…In 2 cases, the retained metallic foreign was associated with malignancy. 2,[4][5][6] The foreign body should be removed as soon as possible, because removal at a later stage could be more difficult because of the foreign body's adhesions to the nearby structure and also its encapsulation by the fibrous tissue. 3,7 The decision to remove the foreign body should balance the risks of removal and the potential benefits, because damages to the vital structure are possible when approaching the foreign body.…”

“…These foreign bodies not only cause infection and chronic irritation of the surrounding tissue, 1 but also lead to irreversible alterations of the delicate facial structures and may result in additional complications, even cancer. 1,2 Even access to it alone is difficult because of the delicacy of vital structures; we usually suggest patients to remove the foreign body as soon as possible. The use of endoscope-assisted and navigation-guided technique makes the procedure less invasive and the manipulation of the surgical instruments near the delicate and vital structures safer.…”

“…Potential sequelae include sinocutaneous fistula, rhinolith formation, chronic pain, lead poisoning, 2 sinusitis, 4 and abscess formation. 5 There are reports of squamous cell carcinoma 6 and plasmacytoma 7 arising in the vicinity of retained sinus projectiles; however, the link between malignancy and foreign body has not been established. Conversely, retained foreign body without sequela has been reported.…”

“…(3) There are at least two reports of malignancies developing around foreign bodies in the sinunasal tract. One was of a patient who developed a plasmacytoma in the vicinity of a metallic foreign body retained for 50 years after nasal surgery (Ben-David et al, 1981). The other was a case of maxillary sinus carcinoma developing in a patient who had a metallic foreign body retained for 48 years (Birnmeyer, 1963).…”
