Plasmid‐mediated multidrug resistance in Salmonella typhi in Kuwait

Abstract: SummaryMultidrug resistant Safmonella typhi infection is common in Kuwait. Between January 1993 and December 1994, 266 strains of S. typhi were isolated from blood of suspected typhoid fever cases attending the Infectious Disease Hospital, Kuwait. Of these, 205 strains were isolated from patients from the Indian sub-continent, 1 0 5 (45%) of which showed resistance to one or more drugs; 91 of these resistant strains showed resistance to the oral antimicrobials ampicillin, chloramphenicol, tetracycline and co-t… Show more

“…Asian countries where MDRTF have been reported include China (1985), Pakistan (1987), India (1988), Malaysia (1991), Singapore (1994), Bangladesh (1994), Vietnam (1995), Japan (1999), Thailand (2001), Korea (2003), Nepal (2005) and Indonesia (2009); other countries include Kuwait (1996) and Jordan (2008) [1,36,38,[45][46][47][48][49][50][51][52][53]. A recent multi-centric study conducted across five Asian countries (China, India, Indonesia, Pakistan, and Vietnam) that are endemic for typhoid reported the prevalence of multidrugresistant S. Typhi strains ranging from 7% to 65% [54].…”
