“…C control; Ac 1 and Ac 2 acute exposure to 10 and 30 lg Cd/g dry food; Chr 1 and Chr 2 chronic exposure to 10 and 30 lg Cd/g dry food; Rec 1 and Rec 2 recovery from 10 and 30 lg Cd/g dry food cleavage of S-S bonds and the formation of bridges between the metal and sulfur in the peptide chains of proteins (Van Straalen and Donker 1994). It was established that in different organisms, the presence of heavy metals was found to reduce the activities of some enzymes: ATPase in rats (Carfagna et al 1996) and the shrimp Penaeus indicus (Satyavathi and Prabhakara Rao 2000), aminolevulinic acid dehydratase in wolf fish Hoplias malabaricus (Costa et al 2007), cholinesterase in Daphnia magna (Diamantino et al 2003) and alkaline phosphatase in Lymantria dispar (Vlahović et al 2009). It is interesting that these enzymes are not specific enzymes for metal detoxification, as well as midgut non-specific esterases.…”

“…Changes in variation of enzyme activities as well as changes in variation of phenotypic plasticity can also be used as indicators of exposure to contaminated environment (Callaghan et al 1998;Vlahović et al 2009). Many ecotoxicological studies discovered the existence of genetic variability for the adaptive responses of a population to acute changes in the environment.…”

“…Under the influence of dietary cadmium, L. dispar 4 th instar was prolonged, with a reduction in larval mass (Ilijin et al 2010), changes known to be a consequence of high levels of juvenile hormones in the hemolymph. Vlahović et al (2009) found that cadmium induces inhibition of alkaline phosphatase an enzyme whose activity is partially under ecdysteroide control (Nemec & Ženka 1996). All previously published results from our group and the results of this experiment indicate that, cadmium induce similar effects as starvation in gypsy moth caterpillars.…”

“…Despite significant differences between the results for both sexes, decrease in body weight under the impact of the studied metals was observed. Mircic et al (2010Mircic et al ( , 2013 and Vlahovic et al (2008Vlahovic et al ( , 2012 studied the impact of cadmium on the larvae of Lymantria dispar (Linnaeus, 1758), using a concentration of Cd at 50 mg kg -1 of fodder. When the larvae were given food containing this dose of Cd, the chronic effect on their body weight was found significant.…”
