Plastics—Villain or Hero? Polymers and Recycled Polymers in Mineral and Metallurgical Processing—A Review

Abstract: This review focusses on the use of recycled and virgin polymers in mineral and metallurgical processing, both high and ambient temperature processes, including novel applications. End of life applications of polymers as well as the utilisation of polymers during its life time in various applications are explored. The discussion includes applications in cleaner coal production, iron and steel production, iron ore palletisation, iron alloy manufacturing, manganese processing, E-wastes processing and carbon seque… Show more

“…Waste to energy encompasses the interconversion of waste materials to energy and can be possibly achieved with less segregation and rinsing. It can be a futuristic feasible global prospect for plastic waste management [76,77]. Recycled macro plastic fibres (polypropylene) are extensively used up in concrete to boost its post-cracking performance and to inhibit shrinkage cracks.…”

“…Furthermore, the presence of carbon in plastic can be used to synthesize carbon nanotube. However, the incineration of hydrocarbon compound could lead to environmental issues due to the formation of dioxins and furans [32]. Therefore, this study is carried out to reuse plastic waste in engineering application.…”

“…[39], and hence the ferrospheres were never free from such elemental oxides. Such impure fly ash ferrospheres have been used as fillers in nanocomposites, coke, smelting [12], steel production and other iron and iron-based industries [123]. Additionally, the ferrospheres also find their application in catalysis-i.e., for profound oxidation and oxidative coupling of methane (OCM) [124], thermolysis of heavy oil and petroleum residue [114], magnetic carriers for the separation of recombinant proteins [125], and composite sorbents.…”
