Platelet Count and Platelet Indices at Various Stages of Normal Pregnancy in Smoking and Non-Smoking Women

Abstract: Our objective was to compare the platelet count and platelet indices of smoking and non-smoking women at different stages of normal pregnancy. Study design:In 247 non-smoking and 123 smoking healthy pregnant women the platelet count, the mean platelet volume, the platelet distribution width and the plateletcrit were compared at 0-10, 11-20, 21-30 and 31-40 weeks of pregnancy. Exclusion criteria were a diastolic pressure ^ 90 mmHg, an endocrine disease, a coagulation disorder, acetylsalicylic acid or phenprocou… Show more

“…Some new reports suggest that SCLC may trigger N‐methyl‐D‐aspartic acid receptor 1(NMDAR1) autoimmunity although the expression of NMDAR1 subunits as onconeural antigens. 9 , 10 SOX2 antibodies were detectable in 61% of patients with Lambert‐Eaton myasthenic syndrome (LEMS)‐SCLC, and in other paraneoplastic disorders, such as opsoclonus‐myoclonus and paraneoplastic cerebellar degeneration, only when there was an underlying SCLC. SOX2 antibodies are specific (>90%) markers for SCLC.…”

“…WBC have been reported to increase throughout gestation in women, despite the hemodilutional effect that occurs (10,40,46 (56) and another has reported no change (12), many others have reported decreases (38,43,49). Decreases in platelet numbers were attributed solely to hemodilution because no evidence of increased platelet turnover (e.g., increased mean platelet volume, reticulated platelets) was observed.…”

“…PLR, however, was not related to smoking [23] in the general population, and neither was platelet count in this study. Lack of evidence for an association between platelet count and smoking has been reported more often [25,26], though lower platelet levels in smokers have also been observed [27,28].…”
