“…On the contrary, the concentration of plasma lysolecithins, but not lecithins, was significantly increased in MS patients and their fatty acid patterns changed in a significant way; more particularly, there was an increase of saturated fatty acids in lysolecithins. Following the pioneer work of C o n n o r and H o a k [2][3][4]10] on the aggre gating properties and the thrombogenicity of long-chain saturated fatty acids, extensive studies on the effect of these substances on platelet aggrega tion have been performed in recent years [5,9,13,16,19,21,22], Despite this, it seems that the mechanism of platelet aggregation by these fatty acids has not yet been elucidated. However, it has been suggested by H aslam [8] that the aggregation induced by fatty acids and thrombin was mediated by ADP since the aggregating effect of these agents could be inhibited by ade nosine.

The present work was undertaken to try to further elucidate the me chanisms involved in the fatty acid-induced platelet aggregation.

“…Lipids serve important functions as membrane phospholipids constituents [Huwiler and feilschifter, 2009]. Analysis of SFAs/USFAs ratios between normal subjects and MS patients have showed statistically significant increase in MS patients and an increase of SFAs may explain the well-known changes in MS patients [ Shore and Alpers , 1963;Caspary et al,1965;Wright et al, 1965]. In combination, changes in cytokine production may provide prolonged changes in inflammatory responses relative to the rapidly reequilibrating levels of PUFA and their metabolites.…”
