Platelet disorders

Abstract: Thrombocytes or platelets are anucleated cells derived from megakaryocytes by process of megakaryopoiesis, with maturation time of 4-5 days. They are small and discoid in shape with size ranging from 2 to 4 μm. The platelet concentration in blood varies between 150, 000 and 400, 000  cells/μl of blood. They are involved in both hemostasis and wound healing. Hence, any abnormalities in platelets can lead to various bleeding disorders. Platelet disorders include thrombocythemia and thrombocytosis, thrombocytopen… Show more

“…However, this would require the platelet count to be determined. Which implies another limitation to our study, since platelet function can be affected by platelet count (44,45). Also, we have not tested platelet function following long-term treatment yet, in which other hemostatic factors besides platelets may also be affected.…”

“…[ 26 ] This is comparable to the elastic modulus values determined for native platelets using AFM (1–50 kPa). [ 27 ] Following evaluation of particle deformability, we constructed an ensemble of FAMCYs with varying diameter between ≈150 nm and ≈1 µm or varying AAc content, and upon conjugating knob B mimetic peptides (AHRPYAAK), utilized them to manipulate fibrin clot architecture.…”

“…Platelet disorders are classified as quantitative (lower or higher count) or qualitative (inherited or acquired) disorders [23]. It should be remembered that aggregates or dilution in samples can interfere with the quantitative results.…”
