Platelet Reactivity Is Independent of Left Atrial Wall Deformation in Patients with Atrial Fibrillation

Abstract: It has been documented recently that left atrial (LA) deformation in AF patients (while in AF) is predictive of subsequent stroke risk. Additionally, diminished LA deformation during AF correlates with the presence of LA blood stasis. Given that endothelial function is dependent on laminar blood flow, the present study sought to investigate the effect of diminished LA deformation (during AF) on platelet reactivity and inflammation in AF patients. Patients (n = 17) hospitalised with AF underwent echocardiograph… Show more

“…TXNIP promotes inflammation and the activation of the monocytes in association with DNA demethylation, which orientates monocytes towards an inflammatory status through the NLRP3 inflammasome pathway [ 203 ]. Alternatively, one team tried to correlate TXNIP platelet content with platelet reactivity, atrial fibrillation, left atrial wall deformation, or tachycardia, but was not able to show any correlation [ 245 , 246 , 247 , 248 ]. Finally, OGA N-acetyl-glucosaminidase, which is the enzyme implicated in posttranslational modification of diabetic complications, has its mRNA levels correlated with TXNIP mRNA levels in the leukocytes of diabetic patients [ 205 ].…”

“…Platelet expression of thioredoxin-interacting protein (TXNIP) was quantified by immunofluorescence as previously described. 16 Briefly, blood was collected in ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) tubes and spun at 250 g for 10 min at room temperature. Slides were smeared, air-dried, and fixed with 4% paraformaldehyde and stored in À70°C freezer, and immunofluorescence staining performed within 6 months.…”
