Platelet-rich fibrin combined with synthetic nanocrystalline hydroxy apatite granules in the management of radicular cyst

Abstract: Radicular cysts are inflammatory jaw cysts confined to the apices of teeth with infected and necrotic pulp. They arise from the epithelial residues in the periodontal ligament as a result of inflammation, following the death of pulp. The treatment of such lesions vary with regard to their sizes; the small cystic lesions heal after an endodontic therapy, but larger lesions, may require additional treatment. Apical surgery for radicular cysts generally involves apical root resection and sealing with endodontic m… Show more

“…Therefore, the effect of PRF on pure bone regeneration remains questionable and requires more validating studies. Similarly, various reports have now supported the use of PRF for pulp regeneration, cystic bone defect, and papilla augmentation under various clinical indications to improve healing [95][96][97][98][99][100][101][102][103]. While these reports are rare and anecdotal, future research aimed at better characterizing the regenerative potential of PRF for various other dental procedures remains necessary.…”

“…In the case of surgical endodontics, no high‐quality RCTs have been identified. In the author’s experience, PRF membranes and liquid are most efficacious in combination with autograft, alloplast, allograft and xenograft materials, and several case reports have highlighted this potential 86‐88 . Future well‐designed RCTs comparing PRF alone and in combination with particulate or autogenous graft materials could ascertain the benefits of PRF in surgical endodontic therapy.…”

“…Research Panda et al (2013) and Anitha et al (2017) demonstrated efficacy in the treatment of aggressive periodontitis [59], [60]. Research by Pradeep et al (2016) showed the success of bone formation in the bone cavity due to cysts [61]. The combination of nanocrystalline HA granules with PRF can fill the cyst cavity as evidenced by radiological observations 6-month-1-year postoperatively.…”
