Platelet-rich growth factor in oral and maxillofacial surgery

Abstract: Platelet-rich growth factor is an innovative regenerative therapy used to promote hard and soft tissue healing. It involves the application of autologous platelet-leukocyte-rich plasma containing growth factors and thrombin directly to the site of treatment. It is the intrinsic growth factors released by activated platelets which are concentrated in a topical gel formula. Clinically, it is an affordable treatment with potentially broad spectrum of applications in maxillofacial surgery especially in the treatme… Show more

“…Platelets contained granules and growth factors, such as TGF-β, PDGF, IGF, VEGF, EGF and FGF-2 (Christgau et al, 2006), which stimulate the inflammatory cascade and healing process. PDGF plays an important role in cell proliferation, angiogenesis tissue and mucous regeneration (Kim and Yun, 2007;Alio et al, 2012;Pal et al, 2012;Sclafani and McCormick, 2012). Angiogenesis can be effective in the production of natural vaginal discharge and lubrication during intercourse.…”

“…The use of PRP in maxillofacial and orthopedic surgery has demonstrated its effectiveness because the presence of the previously mentioned growth factors included in the PRP promotes a shorter wound healing period. 32,33 It is therefore evident that in a pocket of soft tissues, vascular healing and final tissue remodeling will be of greater quality. “…The protocol is unique because it does not include leucocytes in its composition; moreover, PRGF can be used in different clinical forms 4,5 . It is known that the proteins derived from platelets such as platelet‐derived growth factor (PDGF), transforming growth factor (TGF‐β), vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and epidermal growth factor (EGF), also plasma containing certain natural growth factors in the name of insulin‐like growth factor (IGF), fibroblast growth factor (b‐FGF) and nerve growth factor (NGF) are able to promote angiogenesis and enhance muscle regeneration 6‐8 . Moreover, it has also been proven that platelet‐rich plasma can reduce chronic pain 9 .…”
