Platelet serotonin transporter and 5-HT2Areceptor binding in adolescents with eating disorders

Abstract: The pathogenetic involvement of the serotonergic system in eating disorders is an established finding. Conclusions from platelet studies are based on results from investigations of subjects with a mean age of 20 years or more. The aim was to investigate whether previous findings in adults are valid also for adolescents who are examined within a relatively short interval after the onset of the eating disorder. [(3)H]paroxetine binding to the platelet serotonin transporter and [(3)H]lysergic acid diethylamide ([… Show more

“…The HTR genes encode serotonin receptors, which are widely distributed in the CNSs including the prefrontal, parietal, and somatosensory cortices as well as the olfactory tubercle. Variants in these gene have been associated with differential treatment responses and with various psychiatric disorders, such as panic disorder (157), impulsive disorder (158), PTSD (159), and eating disorder (160). In children, HTR2A variants are related to differential risk of being hyperactive (161) with harsh parenting styles (162, 163) or after experiencing childhood abuse (164).…”

“…Gene and protein expression of SERT in platelets can reflect the phenotypes of many psychological and neurological diseases (Paaver et al, 2007;Sigurdh et al, 2013). Platelets are easily available for investigation of SERT functions in the central nervous system (Mouri et al, 2016).…”

“…In this sense, lower density of platelet 5-HT 2A receptors has been observed in adolescents with eating disorders [48]. Moreover, progressive reductions of brain 5-HT 2A receptor density have been proposed as an indicator of schizophrenia [47].…”
