Platform Design When Sellers Use Pricing Algorithms

Justin P. Johnson,
Andrew Rhodes,
Matthijs Wildenbeest

Abstract: We investigate the ability of a platform to design its marketplace to promote competition, improve consumer surplus, and increase its own payoff. We consider demand‐steering rules that reward firms that cut prices with additional exposure to consumers. We examine the impact of these rules both in theory and by using simulations with artificial intelligence pricing algorithms (specifically Q‐learning algorithms, which are commonly used in computer science). Our theoretical results indicate that these policies (… Show more

“…5 Finally, our paper is related to the burgeoning literature that studies the information design problem of platforms, often in an environment with differentiated products but without search frictions. Recent contributions include Armstrong and Zhou (2022), Johnson et al (2023), andTeh (2022). 6 In our model, the platform's design choice is with respect to the market accessibility level.…”

“…It also poses challenges for the platform to govern the live streamers effectively (Pan et al, 2022). The platform can regulate the behavior of platform users by setting rules or governance designs, much like a government regulator that runs an economy (Johnson et al, 2023;Teh, 2022). Effective platform governance helps facilitate cooperation and prevent abuse (Grimmelmann, 2015;Zhang, Li, & Tong, 2022).…”
