Playing it Safe: Approaching Science Safety Awareness through Computer Game-Based Training

Abstract: Safety is a critical component of any workplace. Within the Science area it is especially important to train students in appropriate safe work practices, as they might be exposed to toxic chemicals, hazardous biological material, and potentially dangerous instrumentation. However, it is often difficult to develop the essential safety awareness, knowledge, and skills in students. This article reports on an innovative approach to lab safety training: the development of an interactive computer game to serve as a … Show more

“…In return this requires compliance to GLP protocols to ensure safety. The gaps on this area can be associated to less attention on (1) introduction to the laboratory safety rules, (2) presentation of an experiment's specific safety concern, and (3) basic quizzes regarding to the safety rules [7]. In an undergraduate laboratory the students are centered towards handling equipment and activities [3] which may directly expose them to potential risk.…”

“…Although safety and health are always been guaranteed by the university through certain rules and codes of conduct, however, it cannot be implemented accordingly, even accidents and injuries often occur to employees and students (4). Thus, safety and health issues need to be addressed by organizations, especially those involving the field of science (23). Safety issues are not only the responsibility of top management but all parties need to play a role (24).…”

“…Health and safety in school laboratories are indispensable elements which are essential for the teaching and learning process (Högström, Ottander, and Benckert 2010;Miliszewska and Sztendur 2011). Laboratories contain dangerous hazardous materials or chemicals, radioactive substances, and flammable objects and are therefore dangerous workplaces.…”
