Pleiotropic effect of the dwarfing gene d18‐k on cool tolerance at booting stage under the genetic background of an extremely cool‐tolerant line Norin‐PL8 in rice

Abstract: Norin-PL8 (ÔPL8Õ) is an extremely cool-tolerant line of rice in Japan that contains genes for cool tolerance originating from a javanica landrace. It was investigated to see whether the dwarfing gene d18-k (kotaketamanishiki dwarf) exerts its pleiotropic effect on enhancing the cool tolerance at the booting stage in the genetic background of PL8. The d18-k isogenic line of the recurrent parent PL8 (D8), PL8, and two commercial cultivars ÔHayayukiÕ and ÔKirara 397Õ were used. For each line/cultivar, the 12°C-5-… Show more

“…spikelet fertility (%), was calculated. Besides spikelet fertility, the two indices used in the previous study (Murai et al 2003) were adopted to measure the extent of cool damage in each treated panicle, as follows. SN-T/C: the ratio (%) of the spikelet number of each treated panicle to the varietal mean of the same trait in the control was calculated, for estimating the percentage of spikelet degeneration caused by cool temperature.…”

“…The treated panicles in each line were grouped in accordance with the number of days before flowering from the final day of the CA or DW treatment, and the mean value of each day-group was calculated for spikelet fertility, SN-T/C and FS-T/C, in order to examine the relation between cool susceptibility and panicle development stages. In previous papers (Murai et al 1991a, 1991b, Murai et al 2003, the L 5 , viz. the mean value of the lowest five spikelet fertilities on five consecutive days in each line/cultivar, was used for evaluating the cool tolerances of lines and cultivars.…”
