Pleomorphic adenoma of the auricle

Abstract: Sirs: Pleomorphic adenoma (PA) frequently arises from the salivary gland, but it may also rarely arise from sebaceous glands in the skin. Only a few cases of PA in the auricle have been reported [5,6,9]. In this paper we report a case of PA in the auricle that was successfully resected.A 50-year-old Japanese housewife noticed a grain-sized growth in her right ear, but she left this untreated for 5 years. During this period, the lump grew slowly but was otherwise asymptomatic. When the tumor became as large as … Show more

“…Several cases of schwannoma have been reported arising from this area [11,8]. PA of the upper respiratory tract or skin may originate from either sebaceous or ectopic salivary glands [5]. PA in the upper respiratory tract may also represent a metastasis from a salivary gland tumor, although metastasis of PA to the pterygopalatine fossa has never been reported [9].…”

“…If the tumor is large or arising in the helix wedge resection of auricle, skin, perichondrium, and cartilage may be required. [11] On microscopic examination, salivary gland tissue was present in the background of chondromyxoid area with epithelial and myoepithelial cells. This suggests that pleomorphic adenoma of auricle in this case was arising from ectopic salivary tissue not from sweat or sebaceous glands.…”

“…However, histologically PAs arising from the sebaceous gland and from the salivary gland are the same. [5] Generally, PAs in the auricle present as small, nontender subcutaneous masses, which are either slowly progressive or static in size. On the auricle, they are generally asymptomatic, and the patient seeks consultation for cosmetic purposes only, as in our case.…”
