Pleomorphic Adenoma of Tongue: A Case Report

Abstract: Pleomorphic adenoma (PA) of minor salivary glands accounts for less than 3% of all head and neck tumors. It is a benign tumor. Palate is the most common site followed by upper lips. Tongue is an unusual site. We present a case report of a 35-year-old male patient who presented with a mass in the ventral surface of the tongue that was diagnosed as PA on FNAC and was treated by surgical excision. Patient was followed up and no recurrence was noted.

“…Unusual locations include throat (2.5%), the retromolar region (0.7%), and the floor of the mouth and the alveolar mucosa (0.1%) 3 . Additionally, previous reports have described PAs in unusual locations such as the tongue 12 . These lesions present as mobile slow growing masses in the head and neck region and are usually asymptomatic on presentation.…”

“…Because PAs are true neoplasms of epithelial and myopeithelial tissue with stromal components, in rare instances they can undergo malignant transformation 2,3,4,8 as carcinoma ex-PA. Carcinoma ex-PA is an aggressive tumor with poor prognosis and a 5-year disease specific survival of less than 50%. Treatment involves surgical excision followed by radiotherapy and/or chemother- apy 10,11,12 . It is important to note that CS and PA are interchangeable terms used to describe benign mixed tumors with fibrous and epithelial components 13 .…”

“…[ 1 ] Pleomorphic adenomas are neoplastic lesions containing tumorigenic epithelial tissue and mucous-like or cartilage-like tissue, with a pleomorphic and mixed histology, hence the name pleomorphic adenoma. Most of them originate from the major salivary glands and a few from the minor salivary glands, [ 2 ] but lingual pleomorphic adenomas are very rare and the number of reported cases is limited. We report a rare case of pleomorphic adenoma of the tongue presenting as a tongue mass in a 56-year-old male patient and discuss its clinical features, imaging diagnosis and differential diagnosis and treatment.…”
