Plexus brachialis

Abstract: This review explains the different approaches to the brachial plexus (posterior cervical, interscalene, supra- and infraclavicular, and axillary) and their advantages and disadvantages (indications, contraindications, and complications) for surgery and postoperative or chronic pain management. One of the focussed areas of this review is the use of continuous catheter techniques. Information about the most commonly used local anesthetics as well as adjuncts suggested in the literature is summarized. As essentia… Show more

“…Blocking the brachial nerves causes numbness and palsy in the arm distal to the injection site and facilitates pain-free surgery [10]. Close to the median, radial, ulnar, and musculocutaneous nerves, the local anesthetic is injected [11]. Often, a rapid-onset solution and long-lasting anesthetic of the amid type is used (e.g., ropivacaine and lidocaine or mepivacaine) [12].…”

“…The advantages such as preservation of consciousness and airway reflexes during operation and prolonged postoperative analgesia are the most common reasons for preferring regional anesthesia. Brachial plexus block for anesthesia or analgesia is a safe and commonly used technique in upper extremity surgery (1) . Intravenous Regional Anesthesia (IVRA) is widely used in extremity surgery, particularly in the upper extremity because of its reliability and ease of technique (2) .…”
