Pliocene marine Bivalvia of Vale do Freixo (Pombal, Portugal): updated taxonomic list and discussion

Abstract: The exceptional Pliocene marine faunal assemblages of west central Portugal have been known since the late 19th century. They include highly diverse molluscan faunas whose study is far to be completed. Discovered nearly 40 years ago, Vale do Freixo (Carnide, Pombal) is perhaps the most outstanding fossil site. Neverthless, the bivalves remain relatively unknown. This study focuses on the taxonomy of this relevant group of marine Mollusca. The research, based on a detailed sampling of three fossiliferous beds f… Show more

“…We revised the bivalve fossil lists in terms of species presence/absence and accounted for the most recent taxonomic and systematic attributions. Indeed, recent articles provided new clarification about bivalve nomenclature and taxonomy (Mikkelsen & Bieler 2003;La Perna & D'Abramo 2011;La Perna et al 2018;Pimentel et al 2021;Brunetti & Della Bella 2022a). Moreover, we modified the chronological attribution of some fossil sites according to recent biochronological evidence.…”

“…The fossil assemblage of Vale de Feixo indicates a local infralittoral environment in which the gastropods were the most diverse molluscan group (Silva, 2001, 2002), followed by bivalves (Pimentel, 2018) and polyplacophorans (Dell'Angelo and Silva, 2003). Other benthic invertebrate groups (e.g., bryozoans [Carvalho, 1961], echinoids [Silva, 2001; Pereira, 2010], and barnacles [Ferreira et al, 2019]) were also well represented in the local ecosystem.…”
